Welcome to Smultron 4, probably the most elegant text editor for your Mac OS X Lion. With the release of Smultron 4 I wanted to take the opportunity here in more detail to list the differences between version 4 and earlier versions.
But first I want to say that there is no upgrade available from earlier version and that is because the way App Store works, there is simply no other way to have separate versions for Snow Leopard and Lion.
To begin with I can list the three main reasons why I have made changes at all:
• Modernise the experience: I want to use the new features in Lion which users expect to have in a modern app and also the basics of the app have remained the same since the first release in 2004 and was time for an upgrade
• Simplicity and elegance: I’m always looking for ways to make my apps more elegant and easier to use for my user while still having really powerful features in the “background”
• App Store: the App Store rules are great for users but they impose some strict regulations on us developers and that has meant that one or two features had to be removed, which is good in the long run
The major changes are:
• A new more flexible and improved way of handling your open documents
• You can rearrange the open documents window in any way so you can also use it as a “tab bar” if you want
• Resume - Smultron will reopen right were you last left off, including your current position in the text
• Auto save - you don’t need to think about saving any more, Smultron will take care of that for you (you can choose to opt out of this in Preferences)
• Versions - you can easily look at previous versions of your text and also restore to any earlier version
• Easier to find what you are looking for in documents and all occurrences of what you are looking for are marked like e.g. in Safari
• Improved full screen experience
• Faster
• Authenticated save has been removed
• Projects are no more but remember that any open documents will reopen automatically
• Improved experience when handling snippets and commands
• Snippets and commands can no longer be organised into different collections or exported/imported
• You can no longer split a window into two parts or open the same document in two windows
• You no longer have a toolbar or can change how bug the icons in the list are
• You can now duplicate documents and lock any of them if you want to stop unintentional changes
• Improved line numbers
• You can now see the word count in the status bar
• You can now select the current line
• Spell checking and substitutions now work in a more intuitive way
• You can no longer automatically open all contents in a folder, but you can of course select all files and open them
• Keeps better track of moved files
• It now follows the standard for what open and save dialogs chose as the default location
